How is biochar made?

Pyrolysis and biochar production

Biochar is produced through a thermal conversion process known as pyrolysis. During pyrolysis, biomass is heated in a controlled, low-oxygen environment, preventing combustion and enabling the material to undergo thermochemical decomposition into three primary products:

  • A stable carbon-rich solid (biochar)

  • Condensable process vapours (often referred to as bio-oil fractions)

  • Non-condensable gases, which can be used to recover process heat

The absence of oxygen is critical. It enables carbon within the biomass to be transformed into a stable solid form rather than being released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.
